Compared to Canon EOS 350D and Pentax *ist DL, the Dynax 5D seems larger. However, it is only boxier, making it look larger. Actually, the difference is only a few millimetres. On the other hand, the Olympus E-300 is wider by 2 centimetres, while the Nikon D50 is significantly higher and deeper. However, it is the heaviest in its class, weighing 135 g more than the Canon EOS 350D. However, camera design, size and weight are very subjective categories with different meaning to each photographer. The Dynax 5D excels by being solidly constructed. The slightly matted body plastic, rubberised grip and the back side of the camera and the high quality buttons set a new level of quality for this class and make the camera stand out. Of course, much more can be said about features and their settings.
The viewfinder is very bright, showing 95% of the scene. For all those who are new to SLRs, viewfinder coverage data is a very good indicator of the class the camera is in. The Dynax 5D can be used to capture RAW+JPEG at the same time. In burst mode, the camera can capture three images per second. In RAW mode, the buffer holds 5 images, and in RAW+JPEG mode, it holds 3 images. In JPEG mode and Extra Fine compression, the buffer holds 6 images, while with Fine compression, the buffer holds 10 images. Good algorithms, a quick Advanced LSI processor and the CxProcess III technology enable the camera to process data quickly, with high quality and low noise levels at high ISO settings. On the Dynax 5D, the ISO value can be set from 100 ISO to 3200 ISO. The camera also has a noise reduction function. Noise reduction is automatically performed for exposures of 1 second and more.
What is it that makes the Dynax 5D so very useful? Anyone buying a DSLR camera should learn how to use other modes, not just the full-auto modes. A lot of captures need to be corrected, or, to put it another way, adjustments must be made to improve the capture. If the photographer is skilled enough to use these adjustments, it is very time consuming and awkward to set them via menus. This is where the Dynax 5D shows how easy it is to access the functions, some of which are not available with the competition, or if they are available, they are buried several menu levels deep.
For me personally, the most desirable quick setting is the ISO sensitivity. On Dynax 5D, this is set with a button on the top of the camera. The left dial enables quick settings of WB parameters. These range from AWB through presets, manual settings, Kelvin settings and green-magenta shift. Very few cameras offer all these possibilities, and even fewer make accessing them so easy. In addition to good autofocussing and metering, exposure correction and exposure lock can be activated using the AEL button. However, this button has another useful feature. Using the menu, the AEL function can be set to spot metering. This makes it possible to use the shutter release to measure exposure in matrix or central weighted mode with quick access to spot metering using the AEL button. This means there are two metering modes available immediately. The next interesting feature is AF area selection, which can be set to either the wide area or manual autofocus point selection. However, by pressing the AF button on the back side of the camera, the camera focuses using the central point only. Again, this offers us two choices. One using the shutter release and the other using the central point with the AF button.
Konica Minolta also has its own image stabilisation system called AntiShake (AS). This system compensates camera shake by moving the sensor. This means no specialised lenses which compensate camera shake by moving lens elements are needed. This is yet another advantage of the Dynax 5D. The built-in AS system makes it possible to compensate camera shake with almost all A-mount lenses. And to be even more confident that the AS system will be able to compensate for camera shake, the viewfinder has five bars showing the level of camera shake. Yet another useful new feature which can help the photographer choose exactly the right moment to press the shutter release.
Even if AF is used, Dynax 5D makes it possible to fine tune the focus using manual focus. This setting (DMF - Direct Manual Focus) is activated using the Fn button, where AF-S mode can be set (Single, for static scenes) or AF-C (Continuous, for dynamic scenes) or AF-A (Automatic, letting the camera choose the mode) and last, DMF (Direct Manual Focus). Of course, the camera can be used in manual focus mode. No need to talk too much about the autofocus system. As would be expected from the company that introduced autofocus to SLR camera market, it works really well. The shutter speed can be set between 30 and 1/4000 seconds, and there's also a bulb mode. Flash sync time is 1/160 s, or 1/125 mode when using AS. The self-timer can be set to 2 or 10 seconds, with the possibility of a reset.
All of these settings, especially the way they are implemented and made easy to use raise the value of Dynax 5D significantly. Also, the built in AS, camera stability bar in the viewfinder, quick access to spot metering and central AF point and the possibility of manual focussing in AF mode make it really stand out. It is these features that make Dynax 5D as easy to use as the most expensive cameras by other manufacturers.
Image quality
Image quality is in most cases a completely personal preference for each photographer. In my opinion, there is only one thing that the Dynax 5D lacks to completely outclass its competition, a larger megapixel count to make it comparable to the EOS 350D. Sharpness, tonality and final quality of the picture depend to a large degree on the lens used, image capture settings and postprocessing. Since the Dynax 5D uses the same sensor as the vast majority of its competition (with the exception of EOS 350D and Olympus E-300) and high quality image processing algorithms running on proprietary Advanced LSI processor and using CxProcess III technology, the picture quality is very much comparable to the rest of its class.
